Frequently Asked Questions: Server Environment, Sync Service, and TCP Ports

This post is part of the Frequently Asked Questions section of my blog. I will pick a frequently asked question and then explain what it is, how it works and the benefits of using that component or feature. For this post, I’m going to answer three quick questions, the first being: “Can the server components be installed in a virtual environment?”

Yes. The server-side components of most newer tracking systems, including Intra Enterprise, do not have any physical hardware requirements. For Intra Enterprise in particular, it is an ASP.NET application that runs on IIS6 or IIS7.

“What is the Sync Service?”

The service that connects the multiple mobile devices with the database. It also holds the source files for the application in a central location, making software updates faster and more efficient. Should a wireless network be available, it also handles the real-time connections to the database.

“What TCP Ports need to be open to allow a tracking system’s Desktop Client to communicate with the server?”

By default, the Intra Enterprise desktop clients communicate with the server on standard SSL web ports (443) using https traffic. Of course, the specific port is completely configurable. This holds true to most tracking systems.
