A few thoughts on how to set realistic goals
Whether you’re ready or feeling like time is passing a little too quickly, 2018 is here! And of course, along with the New Year comes the requisite resolution to be a better “you”. We for one think you’re great just the way you are, but it’s understandable that you might need to assess your business objectives and make projections for the upcoming year.
Unsure as to how to set realistic goals? Here’s a few thoughts on how to tackle this tricky task:
- If you have a big goal, set smaller milestones along the way. This will help you determine how you plan to reach your goal. You’ll feel a well-deserved sense of achievement when you hit your milestones while simultaneously affirming you’re on the right track. If you find you’re not hitting your milestones when you want to, or not hitting them at all, then you’ll have a better idea of where you’re hitting your snag and why. Don’t panic, just reassess and try again.
- Create a few metrics and track your projected progress alongside your actual progress. Need ideas? A few data points you might find helpful to measure are budget, time, volumes, whatever it is you want to improve on. Give it three months and see…how close or far off are you? Are you noticing any trends? If you’re on point, then terrific! If not, that’s fine too! Now you have that much more information to help you set appropriate goals for you and your team.
Knowing where to set realistic goals is an iterative process, so be kind to yourself as you go through your discovery phase. Agonizing over setting the perfect goal will just paralyze you, so be brave, do some research, make some informed guesstimates, and see how it goes!
